Choose the document, then a photo. The head goes where its rule says, every check is shown with what to fix, and the photo never leaves your device.

The first photo downloads the face-reading files once (about 20 MB); your browser keeps them for the next.

Before you take it
  • A plain light wall behind you, and daylight on your face from the front: no shadow on the face or the wall.
  • The camera at eye level, about 1.5 m away; someone else takes it, or a timer. Leave room above the head and below the shoulders.
  • Head straight, eyes open, mouth closed, a neutral face, the hair off the eyes. Glasses only where the document allows them, with no glare.
Test your wall first

Photograph the empty wall where you will stand, in the same light, from where the camera will be. It is read here against this document's rule before you take the portrait; the photo is not kept or sent.

A camera sets its own light for a bare wall, so the light is read again on your portrait.

    How it works

    1. Choose the country and the document; its rule and its official page show under it.
    2. Choose a photo or take one. The face is found and the photo framed to the rule, levelled only where the document allows edits; a form that crops the photo itself gets the checks alone.
    3. Read the checks; move the top line if the hair is not under it; choose a white background where the document allows it.
    4. Download the photo for an online form, or a sheet of copies to print at 10 × 15 cm, 4 × 6 in or A4.

    Why this one

Each rule from its official page
The size, the head's range and the background come from the government's own page, linked and dated, not from a copy of a copy.
    The checks, with the reason
Eyes open, head straight, the head's size in millimetres against the rule: each named, and what to do where one fails.
    Free, with no upload
No sign-up, no watermark, nothing to pay at the end. Your photo stays in your browser; nothing is sent to us or anyone.

    Questions

How do I make a passport photo at home?

Stand in daylight against a plain light wall and have someone take the photo at eye level from about 1.5 m. Choose your document here and then the photo: it is framed to the rule and checked, and you download it or a sheet to print.

    Will my photo be accepted?

The checks follow the document's published rule, but the office that takes the photo decides. The checks look for a tilted or turned head, a head too small or too large, closed eyes and a background that is not plain; shadows on the face and glare on glasses are for you to look at.

What is the head size rule?

Most documents measure from the chin to the top of the hair. A 35 × 45 mm photo usually asks for 32–36 mm; the US 2 × 2 in photo for 1 to 1 3/8 in (25–35 mm). Each document's own numbers are shown under the menu with its source.

Can I change the background to white?

Where the document allows edits, yes: choose White. Some (the US and the UK among them) do not allow a photo to be retouched: there it is only cropped, never turned or retouched, and the background stays as taken.

    How do I print it?

Download the sheet and print it at 100 % (no “fit to page”, and not borderless: that enlarges it a few per cent and cuts its edges) on photo paper of that size, at a shop or at home; cut along the grey lines. A 10 × 15 cm sheet holds eight 35 × 45 mm photos.

What about an online form that asks for pixels and KB?

Choose its online upload in the menu: where the form allows a resize, the photo is made at the pixels it asks for and fitted under its KB; where it wants the photo unaltered, it is checked as it is. For any other size, choose “Another size: your form's numbers” at the end of the list.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. The face is read inside your browser; nothing is sent to us or anyone.
